Family rivalry..Jon Mark Owings and brother Micah are in a home run race with one another. Both have 12 for the season, Jon Mark for Gainesville and Micah for Georgia Tech… Jon Mark and Chris Nelson are both listed in Baseball America’s player of the year watch... Nelson has been rated the #11 High School prospect in the nation by Baseball America in their latest edition…Dexter Fowler has upped his home run total to 10 for the season, and has been rated by Baseball America as the # 9 High School prospect in America…East Coweta recently had their 14 game win streak snapped, but look for them to put together another long streak as the season progresses….Kyle Cofield is 3-1 for Southside High and has hit 3 home runs…Luke Putkonen made his first mound appearance of the season this past weekend, pitching 3 strong innings with his velocity between 88 and 92…Tim Ladd and AJ Gilbert both pitched outstanding games this past week against Cross Creek (Augusta, GA) and Cleveland HS (Tennessee), respectively. Ladd struck out 13 in his outing, and Gilbert gave up 1 hit in 6 innings during his stint…Nick McEntyre continues his hot hitting, leading Marietta HS with an average around .450…Brad Feltes and Chattahoochee have started out strong with a 13-1 record…Roswell HS has started strong, losing only 2 games so far, and Miers Quigley and Brent Hallman have been outstanding on the mound…Ryan Peisel continues to lead Lassiter on the mound with a 3-0 record, and with the bat, even though they have struggled early as a team… In the college ranks…Brandon Boggs continues to lead Georgia Tech in hitting with a .359 average, with Steven Blackwood, Micah Owings, Tyler Greene, and Clifton Remole all hitting .300 or above for the season. Jordan Crews (ERA 1.80) and Ryan Self (ERA 2.70) are among the Tech pitching staff leaders in ERA…Steven Drew returned to action this past weekend from a hamstring injury with a bang, hitting 2 home runs in Saturday’s and 2 more in Sunday’s games against Miami. Drew is rated as the #1 college position prospect in the nation by Baseball America…Marshall Szabo and Josh Smith continue to rank among University of Georgia’s top hitters, both hitting over .300 for the season…Grant Burruss is leading Georgia Southern with 11 home runs and 41 RBI’s to go along with a .322 batting average, while Brian Harrison is among the pitching leaders with a 5-2 record and 3 saves..
