Yankees in the Major League Baseball Draft: Once again, a Yankee shortstop goes in the 1st round. Tyler Greene was selected in the 1st round of the recent MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, making him the 3rd Yankee shortstop to be selected in the 1st round. In 2004, both Steven Drew and Chris Nelson were both 1st round picks. Drew recently signed for over $5 million and Nelson signed last summer for over $2 million. Greene became the 10th current or former Yankee to be drafted in the 1st round. Outfielder Keiron Pope, from E. Coweta HS, was a 4th round pick of the Baltimore Orioles. Here’s a list of all current and ex-Yankees picked this year: Tyler Greene 1st round Cardinals Micah Owings 3rd round Diamondback Keiron Pope 4th round Orioles Mitchell Boggs 5th round Cardinals Kyle Cofield 8th round Atlanta Miers Quigley 19th “ Cardinals Michael Hyle 22nd “ Chicago Cubs Steven Blackwood 26th “ Cardinals John Hester 33nd “ Boston Chris Hicks 35th “ Texas Ben Jeffers 44th “ Atlanta Another interesting note- With Blackwood’s selection, it brings the number of players drafted from the Yankees 2001 Connie Mack Championship team to 12, and the approximate total value of all their signing bonuses to over $10 million. |
