Week of September 28

Players begin to make verbal commitments to college for 2006:

As expected, the potential of our upcoming seniors drew a lot of attention from college coaches this summer.  Once again we anticipate that they will all sign scholarships, but this year has been a bit of surprise so far due to the number of different schools involved.

Here’s a rundown of our verbal commitments to date:

Michael Demperio---University of Texas

Mark Fleury---University of North Carolina

Tom Hickman---Georgia Southern

Brett Maxwell---Georgia Southern

Brandon May---University of Alabama

Mike Meschke---University of Alabama

Dean Weaver---University of Georgia

James Wiley---Ole Miss

Demperio is the first Yankee to ink with Texas, and Wiley the first in many years to choose Ole Miss.  Hickman and Maxwell will join former Yankees Dustin Evans, Thomas Turner, Brian Harrison, AJ Gilbert and Brian Pierce at Southern, while May and Meschke will join Miers Quigley and Alan Ponder at Alabama, and Fleury will team up with former pitcher Luke Putkonen at UNC.  Weaver will join Gordon Beckham, Brent Hallman, Trevor Holder, Ben Jeffers and Trey Sheffield at UGA.
