2002-2003 BASEBALL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR JOEY IVANSCO / STAFF Roswell's Jimmy Barthmaier (right) says his summer baseball coach, James Beavers, taught him how to pitch. ROSWELL'S BARTHMAIER
By JIMMY BARTHMAIER
I'd really have to say my summer baseball coach James Beavers [is my inspiration]. He's been my coach with the East Cobb Yankees for about three years. He's taught me a bunch about pitching. He's brought me to where I am right now. I wouldn't be able to do what I can pitching-wise and on the baseball field without him. He pitched at Georgia Tech. He's probably one of the best summer ball coaches in the country. He's always got the best teams. He just knows the game probably better than anyone I've met. He saw me pitch, and he told me he would make me a good pitcher. He basically taught me how to pitch. He worked with me on different pitches and worked on making me a pitcher, not a thrower. Everyone who plays for him has gone to a Division I college, if they haven't gone pro. He scouts around the state and looks for potential. He's worked with me on every part of the game. If I ever needed work during my high school season, all I have to do is give him a call. He works with all of the kids during the winter. He holds workouts for all the kids. He's [an insurance] agent and has a flexible
schedule. He's a great guy. As a person, he puts the kids on his team before
anything else. He'll always be there for us, even if it means coming to
watch us pitch [at high school games] or talking to scouts for us. If we
need any kind of equipment, he has it there for us the next day.
